Popped in at lunch and grabbed a few odd things, as well as the more DVRs to harvest for their hard drives.

Curious, but is there a program that read DVR files? I have a couple of old DirecTV DVRs that I would love to be able to read the content off of them.
Also, I'm jealous of your Goodwill.

I’ve never tried extracting the data and reading it in a computer. With TiVo DVRs I would just watch what was on them before removing the drives, and would just do an analog transfer if I wanted to save something. I don’t know if DTV DVRs allows you to do the same. I may try it out of curiosity.
The Outlet centers are the places to go. Every large city or region seems to have one. It would be worth it to see if there’s one near you as it’s a hoot and a half digging around for odd little treasures.

I haven’t put any batteries in it yet - what does it do?

It does always seem like you find cool stuff. The nearest outlet to me is in the next state over (right now Google lists it as only a 32 minute drive, but anytime they are open, it’s likely to be longer)

I’m quite lucky - there’s one around the corner from my office, which is only two miles from home. And then there’s another about 2 5 miles away near my old office; I don’t get out that way very often and am happy to go to the one near home. But if I buy a house in IL and commute across the river on light rail I probably won’t be able to go as often which, given the amount of clutter in my house, would probably be a good thing...
